Planning a New Year treat in the Algarve

My husband and I are planning to go away for a short break after Christmas with our two young children. We’re hoping to go to Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal. Can you please recommend some places to stay and things to do to keep the kids entertained?

Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve because it is so tourist-friendly with plenty of great hotels, bars and restaurants. Renowned for its beautiful beaches which are some of the best in the Algarve, Lagos is the ideal spot to relax and enjoy some quality family time.

When in Lagos, the beaches should be your main priority. There is the wonderful 4kms of golden sands along the Meia Praia; the Batata Beach just across the road from the town centre; the Dona Ana Beach which nestles beneath the cliffs; the sheltered Camilo Beach and the stunning sandy bay of Porto de Mós Beach. All the Lagos beaches have sunbeds to hire and are supervised during the bathing season.

Lagos Zoo is an ideal family day trip that the children will really enjoy. With over 120 different animals and 200 botanical species, the park offers a fun and educational day out for the whole family. Feeding time is definitely one of the highlights of the day and is not to be missed! The zoo is home to lemurs, wallabies, reptiles and tropical birds to name but a few! You can watch the Cormorants and Pelicans being fed daily and observe the antics of the primates during their feeding time. The petting zoo should prove popular with your children too!

If your family are feeling adventurous, the Filsurf Surf school in Lagos is one of the most popular schools in the Algarve, they are happy to teach beginners the basics and will teach children from ages six and up.

The Marina in Lagos is also a very popular spot and is the ideal location to enjoy an al fresco dinner and drinks while looking out at the spectacular yachts. There is a wide range of restaurants on the Marina which offer everything from traditional Portuguese cuisine to Indian, Chinese and Tapas. Alternatively you can venture into the heart of the town where you’ll find many more restaurants and bars in a vibrant, lively atmosphere.
