Golf, shopping and fine dining in popular Kildare - Travel Guide This Week

My fiancée and I want to organise a break for both us and our parents before our wedding next year. Both of our fathers love golf and our mothers equally love the opportunity to hit the shops. With so many great locations to choose from we are finding it difficult to agree on just one. Is there any particular region that you can recommend?

Bringing both your parents together through activities they both love is a fantastic idea and the perfect way to bond and relax in advance of your wedding. I would suggest a stay in the beautiful county of Kildare for a weekend break because you certainly won’t be stuck for things to see or do while you are there.

Kildare is a popular destination for golfers with many majestic courses to challenge golfers of every level. The ever popular K club which is nestled in the picturesque village of Straffan was designed by golfing great Arnold Palmer. Home to The Ryder Cup and Smurfit Courses - considered two of Europe’s finest Championship courses - these will offer even the most seasoned golfer a fantastic experience.

Equally impressive is Carton House which is just two miles away from the town of Maynooth. Home to two superb championship courses, the Montgomerie Course and the O’Meara Course it’s the perfect way to enjoy a little bonding over the sweeping fairways and impeccable greens.

For the ladies who love to shop, a visit to Kildare Village is a must. This is a luxury designer outlet shopping village featuring a number of the world’s leading fashion brands so be sure to bring your credit card! While in Kildare Village, why not make a day of it, book a table in L’Officina a beautiful Italian restaurant which will provide a much needed rest or refueling during your day of shopping.

If Kildare Village doesn’t provide what you are looking for then you must visit the Whitewater Shopping Centre in Newbridge. This is said to be one of Ireland’s largest shopping centres outside of the capital city so you won’t be disappointed. The centre features three anchor megastores and many of the leading high street names. When at the Whitewater Shopping Centre you mustn’t leave before going to the Newbridge Silverware store which is located just three minutes walk from the back of the shopping centre.

After a day on the golf course and in the shopping centres you are sure to have worked up an appetite. I’d recommend booking a window table in Chapter 16 restaurant in The Silken Thomas where you can enjoy views of Kildare’s historic market square. After a stunning meal you can go to the adjoining Squire Gannon’s or Lil Flanagan’s where you can end the night with a little traditional Irish music.
