Travel: Something for the whole family in Gran Canaria

Amadores Beach
I would like to take my extended family on a week away to the sun in June. I have never been to the Canary Islands before but have heard good things about a couple of the resorts. Can you recommend a spot that would be a good holiday for a large group, including kids and elderly family members, that has a direct flight from Ireland?

I would like to take my extended family on a week away to the sun in June. I have never been to the Canary Islands before but have heard good things about a couple of the resorts. Can you recommend a spot that would be a good holiday for a large group, including kids and elderly family members, that has a direct flight from Ireland?

The Canary Islands are a fantastic holiday destination. Situated just off the north western coast of Africa, these seven small Spanish islands are home to some of the most popular, sunniest tourist destinations in Europe. Each island does have its own unique personality, and for the trip that you have described, I would suggest Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria.

Gran Canaria is the third-largest island in the archipelago and while it has other cities such as Las Palmas and Playa del Ingles, Puerto Rico is perhaps the most family-friendly. Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus have regular direct flights to Gran Canaria, from Dublin and Cork.

Not too large in size, this quaint little town is popular with families due to the blue flag beaches, surrounding activity parks and mellow atmosphere. The town centres on the main beach, Amadores Beach, and the hotels and apartments are built up the side of a steep hill. If you are travelling with elderly companions be sure to choose a hotel that is near the base of the slope.

It won’t take you long to get familiar with the compact town. You’ll find local restaurants and bars that serve tasty traditional and European dishes all along the seafront. There is a large retail centre at the bottom of town, where you’ll find chemists, shops, medical centers and supermarkets.

Once you’ve settled in, there is a lot to explore in the surrounding areas. The kids will love the Angry Birds Activity Park that has something for children big and small. From zip lines to car racing, a fun-filled day is sure to be had. If that’s not enough to entertain the little ones, take a trip to one of the biggest water parks in Gran Canaria; Aqualand.

Located a short drive away in Maspalomas, this is a fantastic water park with both ‘big kid’ and ‘small kid’ amenities. A bus goes regularly from Puerto Rico town centre.

For a special family day out that everyone can enjoy - not to mention a great way to see the island - go on a dolphin and whale watching tour. Spirit of the Sea is a company that operates out of Puerto Rico harbor and takes you out on to the crystal blue sea, searching for the fascinating sea creatures that live off the coast of the island. It’s a day that is sure to delight everyone in your party.

Whether you choose to have an action-packed escape or a chilled out trip, Puerto Rico truly has something for everyone.
