THE deputy president of ICMSA and Tipperary farmer Pat McCormack, says that milk producers can anticipate a major boost in their milk price after a 10.4 per cent increase in the Global Dairy Trade Auction was recorded this Tuesday.

Mr McCormack, who is also chairman of the Dairy Committee, said the surge in market price was exactly the news that dairy farmers needed to hear and he called on milk processors to adjust their own prices upwards accordingly at the first opportunity.

“ICMSA has been stating clearly since the end of last year that there is scope for major increases in milk price - particularly at a time when dairy farmers have been dealing with disastrous weather conditions and massive feed bills from 2012 and into 2013.

“While some co-ops did move forward with an increase in January milk price, it is very clear that there is further scope for increases in milk price. Of particular interest to Irish dairy farmers in the latest auction is the fact that the butter index increased by 9.6 per cent, Cheddar by 8.3%per cent, SMP by 4.6 per cent and WMP by 18 per cent.

“These are all products of huge importance to Irish dairy farmers and it should be noted that this latest increase in the overall index is the sixth increase in a row as illustrated in the graph below giving a total increase of 20% since mid December 2012”, noted Mr McCormack.

“Dairy markets are in a very strong position at present and dairy farmers need a milk price immediately to meet their bills. The time for any foot-dragging is absolutely gone and this latest surge in international markets leaves the processors with less excuse than ever. ICMSA demands that February milk price is increased fully to reflect accurately the figures being fetched on international markets right now”, said the ICMSA deputy president.
