Coonan Welcomes Slurry Move

FINE Gael’s Deputy Noel Coonan has welcomed Minister Phil Hogan’s decision to announce extensions to the periods for the application of certain fertilisers in response to the challenges farmers are facing as a result of the very difficult weather conditions this summer.

Deputy Coonan, along with farm representatives, had urged his Fine Gael colleague to extend the time period allowed in an effort to give farmers a chance to recover from one of the worst years for agriculture in recent times.

“Minister Hogan has allowed the application of chemical fertiliser to continue for a further short period to boost grass growth and address fodder shortages. Following the poor weather over summer, farmers are only now getting to cut silage - some for the first time this year,” said Deputy Coonan. The Minister has decided to extend the period for application of chemical fertilisers to 30 September 2012. The closed period for applying chemical fertiliser had been due to commence on 15 September.

Deputy Coonan also welcomed that the Minister is granting an extension to the period for spreading organic manures produced on farms to 31 October 2012, an extension of just over two weeks.

“The agriculture sector is of paramount importance to our economic recovery and we have to support farmers following very difficult weather conditions this summer,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
