Exiting bailout a ‘vital milestone’ says Coonan

Tipperary TD Noel Coonan has welcomed the momentous occasion of Ireland exiting the bailout programme last Sunday. He said this “vital milestone” was an important step on Ireland’s road to economic recovery and will send a powerful message internationally that Ireland was a country in which you can invest with confidence.

“The importance of this occasion cannot be underestimated. Fine Gael in Government only reached this point because of the patience and resilience of the Irish people and the tough decisions we have had to make in Leinster House due to the mismanagement of the previous Fianna Fail and Independent-led Government,” said Deputy Coonan.

“The people of Tipperary and nationwide have sustained tough sacrifices and must be acknowledged as being central to Ireland exiting the bailout. We are still facing challenges to fix our economy but now we can manage and rebuild our economy in a sustainable way.”

“It is important now to look forward with confidence. We will publish a new medium term economic plan to build on the progress we have made and to ensure that the culture and practices that caused the crisis are never repeated.

“The creation of jobs is top priority. We in Government have worked hard over the past three years to retrieve our economic sovereignty. Three years ago, 1,600 jobs were being lost in this country every week. Now every week over 1,000 extra new jobs are being created,” continued Deputy Coonan.

“Fine Gael in Government will continue with our course of action. Exiting the bailout will not fix our economy overnight but is a reflection of our progress and dedication to doing everything possible for our emerald isle,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
