THE Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, has announced the recipients of grants under the 2012 Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund. These projects are co-funded by the Department and Local Authorities.

A total €337,000 has been provided by the Department and €337,500 is being provided by local authorities, bringing the total funding to €674,500 for 2012.

North Tipperary County Council was allocated €8,000 by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. North Tipperary County Council is also providing funding of €8,000, providing a total of €16,000 for North Tipperary.

A total of 10 projects will be funded under Local Agenda 21, including data collection in a wetlands, biodiversity projects, environmental education programs to run in primary and secondary schools throughout North Tipperary, sustainable art and an interactive exhibition.

The Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund promotes sustainable development by assisting small scale, non-profit environmental projects at a local level.  Projects are recommended for funding by local authorities following an open call for applications.

Announcing the recipients of this year’s funding Joe MacGrath, county manager, North Tipperary County Council, stated: “Following on from previous years the fund will encourage projects that focus on environmental awareness and action, and complement national environmental policies such as those on waste, biodiversity and climate change. Through the provision and development of environmental initiatives in communities, the fund encourages action and innovation through sustainable lifestyles and developing sustainable communities”

Local Agenda 21 is a process which facilitates sustainable development at community level. It is an approach, based on participation which respects the social, cultural, economic and environmental needs of the present and future citizens of a community in all its diversity and which relates that community and its future to the regional, national and international community of which it is a part
