“Don’t let them squeeze the life out of Saint Patrick’s,” Councillors urge
Cashel Councillors, Tom and Maribel Wood have written to Ms. Anna Marie Lanagan, area Manager for South Tipperary Health Services, expressing their concerns that beds and services at Saint Patrick’s Hospital may be affected following the upcoming budget.
In their letter they say, “We would be unwise to think that Mr Chris Monaghan, Hospital Management and your team are not presently planning a further reduction in hospital beds at Cashel and we don’t want to see the reduction either in beds or services introduced by stealth.”
They remind her of correspondence dated November 2011 when she wrote to them confirming that, “Saint Patrick’s would continue to play a significant role in the provision of public services for older people within South Tipperary Community Services”.
As Mayor, Maribel Wood met with Ms. Lanagan earlier this year and expressed her view that any loss of beds or failure to replace staff was calling into question the viability of the hospital in the long term.
Councillor Tom Wood is also concerned about future developments within the service after the reunification of North and South Tipperary in 2014 and contends that every effort has to be made now to retain existing beds and services in Cashel. “We lost one of the finest hospitals in the country when Our Lady’s was closed and we don’t want to experience a similar situation with Saint Patrick’s, the envy of similar hospitals for the elderly around the country, but with the clouded air of secrecy and an often heartless government, anything can happen,” he concludes.
