Council Consider Lighting Nenagh Castle
NENAGH Town Council will investigate the possibility of lighting up Nenagh Castle on a consistent basis and especially to mark the week leading up to St Patrick’s Day.
Independent Town Councillor Hughie McGrath, a prominent member of the committee which runs and fundraises for the St Patrick’s Day Festival in the town, raised the issue at the November meeting of Nenagh Town Council.
Town Clerk Dónal Purcell revealed that the OPW (Office of Public Works), who retain ownership of the castle, were “open to the idea”, but Mr Purcell also explained that it could prove difficult to find funding for such a project.
In response Sinn Féin’s Cllr Séamus Morris said that the lighting of the castle silhouette was “something that I want to see happen” while he also revealed that he was “shocked” that Cllr McGrath’s project had not received funding from Leader.
“A castle without proper lighting really is not finished,” Labour Councillor Virginia O’Dowd said.
Nenagh Town Manager Marcus O’Connor revealed that the potential project was something that the executive would “definitely investigate”.
