Philip Quirke, of Suirway Automation in Clonoulty, won the innovation award at the recent National Dairy Show in Millstreet, Co. Cork. Philip won with his device which allows electric fences to be turned on and off remotely from the field with a mobile-phone, rather than having to travel to the source.

There are no instillation fees or set up costs, and the phone call sent to the GSM(Global System for Mobile communications) device at the power source isn’t answered, so there are no phone bills. The device receives call like a normal phone, and so can be rung by any phone, on any network. These GSM devices can be adapted to control power to such equipment as a mains water supply motorized valves, sludge pumps, lighting, opening and closing industrial, domestic and farm gates, and heating and many other applications.

Philip Quirke first came up with the idea while on a farm fitting an automatic gate, one of Suirway’s other products. The farmer called , asking him to turn off the electric fence, which then meant going all the way back to the farmyard.

This product was recently launched at the National Ploughing Championships and received a positive response from the farming community. The units cost €180.00 plus vat, and can be found at www.suirwayautomation.com or by calling 0504 42497.
