Sinn Féin Councillor for the Cashel-Tipperary M/District Martin Browne is calling on Eircom to take immediate action to repair its service in the Dualla-Ballinure area, after it was brought to his attention that landlines have been out of service for the past three weeks.
Cllr Browne says he has been contacted by the families of elderly people who feel cut off from their communities and families because of this, many of these elderly people feel vulernable as panic buttons operate through the landlines.
The Sinn Féin Councillor is worried that this problem will happen in other areas if it is not taken seriously by Eircom and other providers. “Most of our elderly people don’t use mobile phones and therefore are totally reliant on their fixed lines for services like this,” said Cllr Browne. Cllr Browne also claims that there is no coverage for mobile phones in some of these areas so they depend solely on this service.
