Tipp Tops Country’s “Worst Bends” List

TIPPERARY has the most bad bends in the country, according to the National Roads Authority. The NRA last week released a “hit list” of 50 bad bends that it wants to eliminate to improve road safety.

Seven of those bends are in Tipperary - six in South Tipp and one in North Tipp - with only Cork coming near the Premier County, with six bends on the list.

The Tipperary bends are on the N52 at Borrisokane, Ballyhusty on the N74 near Kilfeacle, four on the N24, including two at Kilshane near Bansha, and one at Killavalla.

Work is already ongoing to remove the bad bends at Congar on the N52, and this work is expected to be complete before the end of the year or early January at the latest.

NRA chief executive Fred Barry said the top “50 or so” worst bends had been identified, and work was already under way or at planning stage on making these safer.

He also said the days of “cheese cutter” wire barriers, used to separate traffic on the State’s new dual carriageways, were limited. But he said the reason the barriers “may be used less in the future” was not a safety one, but the fact that they cost more to maintain than traditional concrete barriers in place on many motorways.
