South Tipperary received an additional €837,542 road funding for the year 2012 – funding that they will not be taken from their 2013 budget according to local Minister, Alan Kelly. South Tipp has benefitted from unspent funds elsewhere.

With some South Tipperary roads in a poor state following summer flooding, local councillors and TDs met with Minister Alan Kelly at the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport last September to try to secure additional funding. The additional funding was provisionally secured for 2012 but would have to come out of 2013 budget.

“Working with the Department, I successfully secured €837,542 specifically for some very poor roads destroyed by last year’s floods. While at the time, it was agreed that this funding would be cut from the 2013 budget – I am delighted to confirm that this will no longer be the case and that South Tipp’s road funding will be restored to its 2013 level and much hard work by the staff of south Tipperary county council has paid off. The road situation is still not satisfactory but this will go a long way towards alleviating some of the worst problems,”

However, Minister Kelly did say that the overall level of funding for roads is reduced nationally; both North and South Tipperary are doing very well in the national picture.

“While there is still a lot of work to be done on South Tipperary roads and we do not have as much money as we would like because of the disastrous economic situation Fianna Fail put the country in, nonetheless I will continue to work to ensure that both North and South Tipperary will benefit to the maximum possible. There is no doubt the road network requires continued investment in the years ahead,” concluded Minister Kelly.
