Public Consultation On Scrap Metal - McGrath

The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government has announced a Public Consultation Process on proposed amendments to the Waste Facility Permit Regulations in an effort to deal with the rise in the number of cases of metal theft.

South Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath who proposed legislation for the Scrap Metal and Cash for gold industry last November has said that the proposals do not go far enough but has encouraged the public to engage with the process.

“I am pleased that the Minister is finally proposing legislation to deal with this matter. It is interesting however, that all of the proposals that he has made were included in the Scrap and Precious Metal Dealers Bill 2011 which I introduced last year and which Minister Hogan and the Government rejected.”

“Unfortunately, the proposals do not go far enough as they only deal with the Scrap metal industry and do not cover the “cash for gold” industry, which my bill had also covered. I believe that we still need to deal with the “cash for gold” industry without any further delay. We have already waited 12 months for the government to get this far so I am disappointed that they haven’t dealt with the precious metal aspect so as to deter all forms of metal theft.” Said Deputy McGrath

“I would encourage the public to engage with the consultation process and in doing so, to seek the introduction of legislation to deal with the “Cash for Gold” stores in a similar manner. I just don’t understand why it is so difficult to introduce legislation to ensure that these stores keep proper records in the same manner that scrap metal businesses will now be expected to keep.”

Submissions to the consultation process must be submitted by Friday 14th December 2012 and can be emailed to wasteconsultation@environ.ie or posted to Waste Policy Consultation, Waste Policy Section, Room 2.01, Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, Custom House, Dublin 1. More information can be obtained from www.environ.ie or by contacting Deputy McGrath’s Constituency Office on 052-6129155.
