Marathon Reading of Ulysses

A marathon reading of James Joyce’s novel, Ulysses, takes place today Friday, the 21st and Saturday 22nd of September in the Source Arts Centre, Thurles.

As part of National Culture Night, 18 groups of volunteers will read one chapter each from the novel over the course of 26 hours to help raise funds for Our Lady’s Children Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin.

Community and Voluntary Association ‘Person of the Year’, Mr. Tom Grace will officially open the reading at 10.30a.m on Friday. An invitation has also been extended to a descendent of the great James Joyce, living in the local area of Thurles.

Refreshments and entertainment will be provided by the local community of Thurles throughout the event with local businessmen and traders hosting a coffee morning, raffles and a ‘soiree’ by the river from 8pm. Local chef, Ger Devaney, will provide readers with gourmet food during the night-time reading.

Sean Tracey Pipe Band and Thurles Silver Band will provide entertainment for the event and an ensemble of local musicians will play a range of material from the Joycean era. John Cooke will play a tenor trumpet and well known singer, Michael Molumby, will perform a rendering array of songs.
