From Bumps To Bust

Sinead Maher’s Bumps to Tots opened on July 1st in Thurles but had to have a closing down sale after business nose-dived following the December 2013 budget.

Six months is a long, long time in business, for Bumps to Tots it was a lifetime. Sinead Maher, a businesswoman from Thurles, married with three young kids, felt she knew there was an opening for another baby clothes shop in Thurles and was vindicated when customers told her so. Business was going well, with early targets being met coupled with customer satisfaction.

But in business a good start is only that…a start.

Confident of success over the coming Christmas period Sinead had hoped for Santa stockings filled with baby clothing. However this all changed overnight with the 2013 Budget, Sinead said “The budget killed us - we had two days straight and not one sale”. The budget left some families with nearly E1000 less in their pockets and with Christmas around the corner people tightened their belts to the point of suffocation. There was time though for Bumps to Tots to still get some of that Christmas trade, but the frustration built as the days went by. The Christmas market in Thurles never had the desired effect on business, as she closed early at 3.30pm bewildered.
