AIB Templemore to Close its Doors

TEMPLEMORE is to lose its local AIB branch, with all of the staff and business at the branch on Bank Street moving to Thurles, heard this month’s meeting of the Town Council. Councillors expressed dismay at the move, following on as it does from the closure of Templemore’s Courthouse, the downgrading of the Garda College, and the planned abolition of the Town Council.
Town Clerk Tom McGrath read out a letter sent from AIB’s Regional Director, Edward Buckley, in reply to a letter sent from the Town Council. “I acknowledge the strong feelings of Templemore Town Council and I apologise that this action will create inconvenience to you and customers,” states Mr Buckley. AIB senior management “fully acknowledged” the custom of the surrounding area over the years to AIB Bank.
AIB officials met with a representative group from the Templemore Traders Association on October 4, to discuss the impact of the decision. “I can assure you this decision was not taken lightly,” states Mr Buckley. “AIB’s decision to close and amalgamate branches and sub-offices across the country, including Templemore, follows a detailed review of our banking services and is a regrettable but necessary step required to help return AIB to viability and provide a return to the taxpayer.
“In making this decision, we were acutely aware of the need to continue to offer customers in closure locations a range of alternative banking services. Most of our staff at AIB Templemore will relocate to AIB Thurles so that they can assist our customers affected by this change.”
Mr Buckley pointed to the AIB services which will still be available in the Post Office. These include; cash lodgement; cash withdrawals of up to E600 per day; and AIB Credit Card bill payment. Cash and cheque lodgements will be available for business customers. “In addition, we are currently working with An Post to provide additional AIB services in AIB closure areas during 2013, specifically cheque lodgement facilities for both Personal and Business customers.
“Overall, we estimate that 85% of the volume of cash and cheque transactions currently taking place in (Templemore) can be facilitated through An Post locally,” stated Mr Buckley. All customer account numbers, cheque books, direct debits, standing orders, ATM/Debit Cards and any credit facilities will remain the same. “I want to assure you and our customers in Templemore of our absolute commitment to ensuring we continue to offer a wide range of alternative banking services both now and into the future,” added Mr Buckley. The closure is due to take place early next year.
