Roscrea witnessed the end of an era on Tuesday evening last week as the Board Members of Roscrea Community Tourism & Leisure Centre (RCTLC) voted to dissolve the Co-Operative.

RCTLC was set up 21 years ago to campaign for a Swimming Pool for the town, and came to be a major force in the town.

The Chairman of RCTLC since its inception and Chair of that first meeting of September 8th, 1994, as the then President of Roscrea Chamber of Commerce, John Lupton said that without the people of Roscrea empowering themselves “Roscrea Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre” would not exist today. He said there is an ongoing need for people to empower themselves through formal structures and he highly recommends the Co-operative structure. In 1994 the prevailing wisdom was that a swimming pool in Roscrea would not be viable or sustainable. A trip to Tipperary town which has a similar sized population to Roscrea, convinced otherwise. The people of Roscrea contributed €165,000 in Shareholding for the establishment of RCTLC Co-Op.
