On Monday 12th September, the NTLP Primary Healthcare Programme for Travellers launched a Keeping Your Heart Healthy DVD.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Ireland accounting for approximately 10,000 deaths each year.
In the National Traveller Health Study (2010) 25% of all Traveller deaths are as a result of heart disease/stroke.
The DVD was produced by the Primary Healthcare Programme and filmed in Roscrea with members of the local Traveller Community.
The NTLP Primary Healthcare Programme for Travellers is funded by the HSE. It has been in existence since 2002 and was established to work towards the improvement of the health status and quality of life of the Travelling Community in North Tipperary. Traveller women were trained as Community Health Workers and are employed by NTLP in this capacity.
They work with the Traveller Community of North Tipperary delivering health information. The DVD will be distributed to Traveller families in North Tipperary and will also be available to other Traveller Projects nationally.
September is Heart Month and the Irish Heart Foundation is this year targeting men in a national campaign. September 25th is World Heart Day and there are events being organised nationally for this. Given the numbers who die from or suffer the long term effects of heart disease it is vital that everyone becomes more aware of the risks. It may save your life. Copies of the DVD are available from the Primary Healthcare Programme at North Tipperary LEADER Partnership in Roscrea.
