The award-winning theatre company Rise Productions returns to The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Friday, May 22nd (8pm) with ‘The Games People Play’, the follow-up to their international smash hit ‘Fight Night’.
This modern re-telling of the Tír na nÓg myth starring Aonghus Óg McAnally and Lorna Quinn played to packed houses when it premiered and went on to top Emer O’Kelly’s list of Independent Shows of the Year in the Sunday Independent.
The show takes the story of our most iconic mythical couple and updates it to contemporary Ireland. Niamh and Oisín were sold the dream - the house, the life, the kids. But what do you do when everything you ever dreamed of still isn’t enough? With austerity cuts taking hold, the mounting pressure of balancing family and career takes its toll, and one night a series of games threatens to unravel their suburban paradise. With their marriage on the brink, can the relationship survive the night?
Abbey Theatre regular Aonghus Óg McAnally plays Oisín and Niamh is played by Gate Theatre stalwart Lorna Quinn, best known as Lucy Mallon in ‘Fair City’.
‘The Games People Play’ reunites the entire Rise Productions creative team behind ‘Fight Night’, which won both Best Actor and the Bewley’s Little Gem award at the Dublin Fringe Festival 2010, and was also nominated Best New Play at the Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2012.
The team consists of acclaimed playwright Gavin Kostick and award-winning actor Bryan Burroughs (who directs the show while Emmy-winner Colm Maher is managing set and lighting design.
