Damer House in Roscrea will host a Genealogy Workshop from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, August 23rd as part of the ‘O Meachair and the Barony of Ikerrin’ heritage event.
The workshop will assist those who would like to start researching their Maher/Meagher family heritage and also those who are more advanced in their research, but who could benefit from expert assistance with any specific query they may have.
Susan Chadwick of RTÉ One Television’s ‘The Genealogy Roadshow’ together with local historian Clare Bohan will provide an overview; assist participants with their ancestry-related queries and help those who wish to embark on compiling their family tree.
The workshop will include: a review of sources of research - 1901/1911 Census, Griffith’s valuations, Church records, etc.
Professional genealogists will be on hand to assist with individual queries.
A resource team will also be present to assist with and demonstrate online searches.
There will also be contributions from the floor about individual O Meachair families and from overseas visitors.
Susan and Clare will also be joined by a team of local experts from all over Ikerrin who are familiar with the families and places of their area and who will help with any general queries that arise.
A fee of €10 will apply to the Genealogy Workshop and also the Academic Conference which will precede the workshop.
The conference will commence at 10am on the theme of late medieval history and the development of the O Meachair clan and of the Barony of Ikerrin itself. Papers will be presented by Dr Paul McCotter (UCC), Seosamh Devine and Adrian Hewson, with a response to the papers from renowned local historian Willie Hayes. Professor Willie Smyth will chair the session.
All are welcome to attend.
