So, what’s it all about? Michael has somehow been booked to deliver a lecture for the hopeless, but he’s ended up in the wrong place. For one thing there are actually women in the audience. Michael does the only thing he can – he totally ignores the women and ploughs on. But as he delivers his lecture the real story of his life-long, tepid love affair with Noreen O’Reilly is slowly and inadvertently revealed.

Donal describes how he and performer Damian were both interested in the nature of the Irish male In particular, his lack of emotional intelligence and general inability to talk about anything remotely relating to feelings. It was something they could both relate to. Then they took it to a farcical, Fr Ted-like level, calling to mind the tragic-comic bachelor farmers of John B Keane and 1950s rural Ireland. What emerged was Michael – a man utterly bereft of emotional skills yet totally unaware that he is.

Donal Gallagher is co-founder and co-artistic director of Asylum Productions. Donal also co-wrote and directed last year’s five-star smash hit Love All and directed the highly-successful Source Community Christmas Panto Cinderella in 2011.
