The Source Film Club returns with a new season of superb films this January.
‘The Artist and the Model’ will be screened at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Wednesday, January 15th at 8pm.
Spanish director Fernando Trueba uses the relationship between an aging artist and his beautiful young muse as the basis for a contemplation on life, death and art in the award-winning drama ‘The Artist and the Model’.
Set in 1943, the film opens in a small French town close to the Spanish border where Lea (Claudia Cardinale) spots a young woman named Merce (Aida Folch) living rough while shopping in the market one day. It turns out that Merce is a refugee from the civil war in Spain so Lea invites her home, offering her food and shelter.
She also hopes Merce will provide fresh inspiration for her artist husband Clos (Jean Rochefort) who has felt disconnected from both life and work for some time.
Merce eventually agrees to pose as a model for Clos and soon a bond develops between the two as each inspires the other to see beauty in the world again even as the horrors of the war are never far away.
Filmed in black and white, Trueba’s film exudes a wonderful timeless quality and its calm reflective tone helps immerse us in the artist’s world, enabling the viewer to better understand the quest for grace which Clos embarks upon.
‘The Artist and the Model’ will be screened at The Source on January 15th at 8pm. Tickets: €9 (€7 concession & €5 for Film Club members). For more information call the box office on 0504 90204 or visit thesourceartscentre.ie.
