The Play On Words Theatre present the award-winning ‘Tom Crean - Antarctic Explorer’, written and performed by Aidan Dooley at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Saturday, January 18th at 8pm.

Here Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes, is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley. Hear the riveting true stories of Crean’s Antarctic explorations as one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive the three famous expeditions: Discovery (1901-1904), Terra Nova (1910-1913) and Endurance (1914-1916).

Crean’s story is a testament to human fortitude against all the elements of the Antarctic with his 36-mile solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly described by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration”. Indeed, Tom Crean was subsequently awarded the Albert Medal for his bravery.

This multi-award winning show has now played critically acclaimed sell-out performances throughout Ireland, USA, Australia, Europe and the UK.

Jason Byrne

Comedian Jason Byrne will feature at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Friday, January 17th (8pm).

After being cooped up in the BBC, writing and recording his sitcom, ‘Father Figure’ for the past few months Jason Byrne is bursting for a chat and he returns to The Source Arts Centre this January to do what he does best - unleash comedy mayhem.

Jason’s recent ‘Wrecking Ball’ spoof for Prince Charles and Camilla at The Royal Variety Performance had the audience and the royal couple in stitches, the inspiration for his grand entrance came about after being dared by an audience member at a recent gig. No words can do justice to this manic ball of comedic energy. The biggest selling comedian at every year’s Edinburgh Fringe has a way of bouncing onto the stage, picking some random object like a fire extinguisher, obsessing about it, pouring forth the torrent of pure comedy that has built up inside his head, making you laugh until you cry and then . . . it’s over.

An hour in his company feels like ten minutes and you won’t be able to remember one joke, not even a funny line, but you may well have split your sides. Tickets to see Jason are the perfect stocking filler for someone special this Christmas.

Don’t miss ‘Jason Byrne Live’ at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Friday, January 17th at 8pm. Tickets are priced at €20 (€18 concession).
