Macra na Feirme is an organisation for young people between the ages of 17 and 35 who are interested in getting involved in sports, travel, drama, debating, or just want to meet new people and have some fun!

To be a member of Macra, you firstly join a Macra club in your area.

This will open the door to new friends and new activities. There are hundreds of clubs across Ireland bursting with activity who always welcome a new face. In North Tipperary Macra Na Feirme is made up of six clubs comprising Aglish, Clodagh, Devilsbit, Moyne, Nenagh and Newport.

Over the last year all clubs have made a significant attempt at recruitment with the result that membership is at a 10 year high. The Chair of North Tipp Macra, Tim Maher said that in his opinion Macra is one of Ireland’s best kept secrets; it’s an organisation that offers countless opportunities to young people, it has something to offer every interest and clubs get involved in so many social events within and outside their own region that nobody will be disappointed.

Macra offers a busy calendar of sports events to keep members active all year round. While many clubs organise their own weekly sports activities, participation in the national sports competitions is open to all members. Competitions include tag rugby, GAA 7-a-Side, bowling, indoor Soccer, basketball and volleyball.

There are public speaking, debating, drama, farm skills and talent competitions along with a host of nights out, weekends away, festivals and various travel opportunities.

Upcoming events for January include our county round of debating on Friday the 6th, a charity quiz in Templemore and our planning night on Tuesday 10th.

We will all be watching TG4 from January also as Devils Bit member Sarah Guilfoyle features on Feirm factor and the highlight of the spring will be the Newport Club’s 60th Birthday celebration on 3rd March.

The highlight of the year was receiving an invitation to visit Aras an Uachtarán in July. Eight members travelled to Dublin to meet President McAleese at the Aras and had a very special day with a large number of community groups.

Other highlights included the Macra Rally in Cork the October bank holiday weekend and we are looking forward to a new year with a jam packed calendar. More information is available from development officer Brigid Walsh on 0860822038 or visit www.macra.ie or find North Tipp Macra on Facebook.
