Allegro! Is an initiative of the Kilkenny Chamber Orchestra (KCO), a group of non-professional amateur musicians of mixed abilities living in Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois, Tipperary and Waterford.
With the support of Kilkenny Borough Council, the KCO has launched an innovative project to encourage members of the public who play a musical instrument and who enjoy the classical repertoire to join in a new adult community orchestra.
According to the KCO Chairperson Beatrice Kelly “there are plenty of rusty musicians around who would love to participate in an adult orchestra but who lack the opportunity or the tuition to help them improve. We hope to launch a new musical programme which is open to all adults with some musical experience who wish to develop their skills and have fun playing music with others.
“We particularly want to invite accomplished musicians and music teachers to join”, Beatrice Kelly explained, “as adult musicians don’t often get the opportunity to play together in ensembles once they leave the school or college orchestra scene. Depending on the level of interest, we may then develop into other groupings later on.”
The focus of the project is a try-out day on Sunday, October 21st from 2.30-5.30pm at Danesfort Community Centre in County Kilkenny. Interested members of the public are invited to register their interest. The try-out is suitable for any adult with an instrument and some classical music experience.
Please note that the orchestra does not have any instruments available for hire at present and participants should be able to read sheet music to some basic degree. However, depending on numbers, the KCO may be able to arrange for adult tuition for particular instrument groups.
Simply register your interest by contacting KCO and come along on the day with your instrument. Please contact KCO in advance so that the group can adequately prepare for the range of instruments involved.
