‘Render’ is a new exhibition of work at the Gallery Tipperary Excel by Emly-based artist Michael Hales.
Michael lives in Emly, but is originally from Maidenhead in the UK.
Michael and his wife Eleanor (from Poulmucca) and young family have settled in Emly after spending some time in Canada.
Michael Hales has a number of portraits and still life pieces which feature in the exhibition.
Michael describes his work as follows: “With these large portraits I have taken recognizable national figures and using media images focused intensely on them. Created not from observing the whole, but piecing together parts taken from closely discernible portions. There is a point of focus within each work. Colour and brushstroke attempt to emulate the close proximity of contemplative attention. I can not paint the initial response. There is a need for more, to find shape, see all colours, to put on canvas a carefully perceived representation.
This following series of still life’s take what has been learnt and translate that into looking at reality. These works are a necessary and part of a journey. They are studies and the foundation. Part of a paramount prerequisite box which must be ticked. A rendering or simply an elucidation between painting and issue is in its infancy with this series”.
Amongst the portraits Michael is exhibiting is one of President Michael D Higgins, Nell Mc Cafferty and sports people Paul O’Connell, Kathy Taylor & JP Mc Manus.
This exhibition is well worth a visit, admission is free and opening hours are Monday-Friday 10am-5pm with some exceptions on Monday and Tuesday mornings.
