Here, in the Romanian film, director Calin Peter Netzer delivers a tense drama about the lengths a mother goes to in order to protect her adult son after his actions result in the death of a child.

Cornelia (Luminita Gheorghiu) is a wealthy and overbearing mother who has a stormy relationship with her spoilt son Barbu (Bogdan Dumitrache). When she’s not criticizing his choice of girlfriends she’s asking the maid who cleans his apartment about what he gets up to and if he reads the Nobel-winning books she gives him.

When Barbu accidentally kills a child from a peasant family while speeding Cornelia is quick to use her connections to try and get him off the hook after he is arrested. She wants to use the opportunity to mend her turbulent relationship with him, but Barbu wants nothing to do with her; yet he knows deep down his mother is his only hope of avoiding prison.
