One could be forgiven for thinking they had been transported to La Scala in Milan, such was the talent on display in Shinrone Hall on Sunday (February 9th).
The Benefit Concert was in aid of Fr Christy’s Salesian Mission and the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Roscrea Community Choir, under Lucy McCarthy and accompanied by Ian Callanan and William Cullagh, opened proceedings with a lively medley of songs which set the tone an amazing night. Operatic renditions surpassed all expectations with professional performances from Stephen Kennedy, Breffni FitzPatrick and Yvonne O’Toole. Stephen Kennedy, who travelled from London, felt very much at home on the Shinrone stage and brought the house down with his renditions of Figaro and Nessan Dorma among others. Yvonne O’Toole’s spine-tingling performance of “O Mio Babbino Caro” and Breffni FitzPatrick’s powerful rendition of “Habanera” delighted the capacity crowd. Traditional music fans were well catered for with the highly talented Kinsella Family, Sean Ryan’s distinctive whistle playing, the sweet duo of harpist, Eimear Teehan and fiddle player Edel O’Meara followed by Coolderry native Billy Hynes on mouth Organ. Accomplished pianist Sarah Mahon performed beautifully. Local singing group “No Half Measures” gave a rousing performance which got the crowd going and Michelle Ryan, accompanied by Diarmuid Fitzgerald and Tadhg Maher, entertained the audience delightfully. The younger members were thrilled when the very talented award-winning Conal Hanamy gave an outstanding performance of a “Passenger” song. A DVD of the concert is available (J10), half of which will be donated to the charity. Contact Oliver on 0866046122 or 0579131139 or Pat on 0879101228.
