Mayor of North Tipperary, Cllr. Michael O’Meara launched the North Tipperary Calendar of Events for 2013 at the Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh recently at a networking event held for Gathering Organisers and Festival & Event Organisers in North Tipperary. The calendar was collated by the North Tipperary Steering Group for The Gathering 2013 and features a packed calendar with over 70 festivals and events to be held in the county throughout 2013.
As well as established events such as the Terryglass Arts Festival, Feile Brian Boru, Dromineer Literary Festival, Spleodar and the Thurles Halloween Arts Festival, many new events have been organised to coincide with The Gathering Ireland 2013 tourism initiative taking place nationally. The new events have an emphasis on inviting overseas visitors such as the Irish Diaspora back to North Tipperary to take part in The Gathering 2013 events. Some examples include: Lorrha-Dorrha Heritage Festival, The Aglish Stepping Stones Feile, Cloughjordan Honours Thomas MacDonagh, the Presentation School Reunion, Thurles; and Welcome Home Tipp Transportees Gathering. In addition to these, a number of clan gatherings are taking place for families such as the Ryans, Woodlocks, Purcells, O’Tierneys and Searsons. Sporting events include World Mirror Sailing Championship; Thurles Sarsfields international Hurling Festival; the Come Home to Walk Festival; The Europub League, Thurles; the Nenagh Cup; and The Hoops International Basketball Gathering, Thurles. Homecomings are also planned for Newport, Birdhill & Toor; Roscrea, and Upperchurch Drombane. For the musically inclined the Thomas McDonagh Pipe Band in Templemore will celebrate its 50 year anniversary in September, and Cloughtoberfest will feature ‘Hot Club’ gypsy jazz music in October. For food enthusiasts, ‘Learn to cook Irish food’ will take place in Cloughjordan House and Cookery school in June.
The Networking Event was well attended and offered an opportunity for those who attended to meet other gathering organisers and receive advice from the guest speaker on the night, Colm Croffy from the Association of Irish Festivals and Events. Two gathering organisers who expect over 50 overseas visitors to come to North Tipperary this year also spoke at the event. Marguerite Madden-Murphy from the Aglish Stepping Stones Feile and Lisa Mc Gee from the US Pomfret Choir Gathering of Voices gave an overview of their programme and how they are promoting their gathering. The networking event also allowed Fionnan Nestor from Fáilte Ireland/The Gathering Ireland Team to give a national update on The Gathering while County Manager Joe MacGrath provided attendees with an update from North Tipperary.
Speaking at the networking event, Mr. MacGrath commented “With such a large number of events scheduled and spread throughout the county for the year, there is a great incentive for visitors to come to the county to see what we have to offer. The local authorities in North Tipperary, IPB and The Gathering Ireland Team are very supportive of the initiative to ensure it is a successful year for tourism in the county”.
The evening concluded with Cllr. Michael O’Meara, Mayor of North Tipperary, launching the calendar of events for North Tipperary for 2013 and stating that “The Gathering Ireland 2013 initiative has resulted in an increased offering for visitors to North Tipperary for 2013. It has shown that local communities can work together with an idea for a festival or an event which will culminate in the diaspora and other visitors coming to the county to enjoy organised traditional music nights, sporting events, arts, heritage or cultural events during their visit.”
