World Riddle takes as its inspiration and source the work of Victorian biologist Ernst Haeckel. Besides being an early pioneering scientist Haeckel represented a powerful voice in the dissemination of Darwin’s work and also coined the terms “ecology” and “stem cell”.

He is best known however for producing countless and unbelievably detailed drawings of never before seen microscopic life and consequently, he literally “blew the minds” of the Victorian world.

Drawing together, elements of Victorian science, etching, digital video, ambient music and 3D glasswork this piece creates a powerful gallery experience, representing a cutting edge fusion of techniques and art forms never before staged in Ireland.

David’s intention is to create an immersive installation that impacts on a modern audience at the same level as Haeckel’s original work in the 1800’s.

David says of his work: “I was first introduced to the work of Ernst Haeckel by West Cork-based musician Clodagh Simonds. Clodagh had used some of Haeckel’s images to illustrate and accompany her atmospheric music and songs. I was immediately struck by the other-worldly quality of these unique drawings and began to wonder what it must have been like, as a Victorian, to have gazed on these depictions of microscopic sea life never before seen by the naked eye, let alone by the general public.”

The images were subsequently created out of Haekel’s original engravings through the process of digital editing and live motion control.

David was a senior producer at RTE (1995-2001) before forming Alchemy Electronic Arts and producing a number of independent film projects. Having always practiced as an artist using a wide range of media, he began the most recent work in 2004 and have been encouraged by the reception of his work in recent exhibitions.

David Bickley is also director of RTE’s popular series Tracks and Trail which returns to our screens on November 16th.
