Thurles Drama Group return to the stage of The Source Arts Centre on Monday, November 4th with their production of Conor McPherson’s ‘The Weir’ - the production will run until Saturday, November 9th.

‘The Weir’ achieved critical and popular acclaim at three world-renowned theaters in the late 1990s - the Royal Court in London, the Gate in Dublin and the Walter Kerr in New York.

In London, it won the Lawrence Olivier BBC Award as the Best New Play of 1997–98 and McPherson received the Critics’ Circle Award as the most promising playwright.

The play opens in a rural Irish pub with Brendan, the publican, and Jack, a car mechanic and garage owner. These two begin to discuss their respective days and are soon joined by Jim. The three then discuss Valerie, a pretty young woman from Dublin who has just rented an old house in the area.

Finbar, a businessman, arrives with Valerie and after a few drinks, the group begin telling stories with a supernatural slant, related to their own experience or those of others in the area, and which arise out of the popular preoccupations of Irish folklore: ghosts, fairies and mysterious happenings.

After each man (with the exception of Brendan) has told a story, Valerie tells her own: the reason why she has left Dublin. Valerie’s story is melancholy and undoubtedly true, with a ghostly twist which echoes the earlier tales. There is the hint that the story may lead to salvation and, eventually, a happy ending for two of the characters.

Directed by Liam Ryan the assembled cast comprises Donal Taylor (Brendan), John O’Sullivan (Jack), Johnny Fogarty (Finbar), Michael Healy (Jim) and Maria McElgunn as Valerie.

As always the opening night performance is a benefit night for a local charity and this year’s recipient is Suir Haven Cancer Support Group. Tickets are priced at €20 including a cheese and wine reception and can be purchased from any member of the group. All other performance nights are priced at €15 (€10 concession) and can be booked by calling the box office on 0504 90204.
