Choirs and singers from across Tipperary are being invited to take part in the second International Gospel Choir Festival in Kilkenny this June. Last year’s festival attracted over 2,000 visitors over one weekend. This year’s festival will triple in size, extending over June, July and August and will feature choirs from the UK and the US also.

Places still remain available for local singers and choirs to sing in Ireland’s largest every gospel choir concert at the festival and to participate in one of the many singing workshops being facilitated by internationally acclaimed choir director Ja Ronn Thompson.

Ja Ronn is travelling to Kilkenny from San Francisco where he currently holds the position of instructor of The San Francisco State Universities Gospel Gators Choir. He will conduct choirs and singers from around the country in Ireland’s largest gospel music concert in St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday, June 16th.

“It’s a particularly tough time for many people in Ireland at the moment and we hope this year’s festival will help to lift people’s spirits and morale. We invite all singers, choirs and music lovers to come to Kilkenny this summer to help us celebrate and enjoy the best of gospel,” Fr Willie Purcell (Chairperson of the International Gospel Choir Festival) said.

“We’ve increased the size of this year’s festival three-fold and we’re particularly proud to welcome Ja Ronn Thompson as our guest director and artist. Ja Ronn’s philosophy is to help people to sing and to live with passion and without fear and we believe this is a very positive message for Irish people in 2013.”

The packed June programme will also feature an open air gospel concert in the shadows of Kilkenny Castle, a unique gospel themed walking tour of Kilkenny City and the country’s first gospel singing workshop for children (8-12-year-olds).

The International Gospel Choir Festival takes place in Kilkenny this weekend - June 14th-16th. A full programme of events and details on choir registration are available at: www.kilkennygospelchoirfestival.com.
