In August 2008 twenty-four climbers from an international expedition set out to reach the summit of K2, considered by many to be the greatest climbing challenge in the world.

As events unfolded, what turned out to be the biggest disaster in the history of climbing K2 occurred when eleven members of the expedition were tragically killed. Among them was Ger McDonnell from Limerick, the first Irishman to reach the summit.

In his documentary film ‘The Summit’ Nick Ryan tries to piece together the events of that ill-fated climb through interviews with the survivors and footage taken during the climb.

Don’t miss ‘The Summit’ at The Source Arts Centre on Wednesday, 12th March at 8pm. Tickets: €9 (€7 concession and €5 for Film Club members).
