The Source Film Club presents a screening of ‘The Great Beauty’, winner of the Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars, on Wednesday, April 9th.
Set in Rome the film tells the story of aging journalist Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo) who lives a life of excess in the upper levels of the Italian capital’s social circles.
After the huge success of his first and only novel at the age of 26, Jep has spent the years since living a life of extravagance where he is the life and soul of every party and a frequent visitor to the city’s most exciting clubs. However, as he prepares to celebrate his 65th birthday, he is forced to confront a chapter from his past which prompts a re-examination of his life in a city that has been his home for a long time.
Directed with wonderful verve by Paolo Sorrentino and with more than a nod to Fellini’s ‘La Dolce Vita’, ‘The Great Beauty’ offers a fascinating study of one man’s excess and subsequent disillusion in the Italian city.
‘The Great Beauty’ will be screened at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Wednesday, April 9th at 8pm.
Tickets: €9 (€7 concession & €5 Film Club members). Call the box office on 0504-90204.
