ROSCREA is to suffer a massive jobs blow with the closure of Taro Pharmaceuticals, a major employer in the town.

Some 31 jobs, plus five security jobs, are to be lost, though the terms being offered to workers were not known to the Tipperary Star at the time of going to press. The news became known on Tuesday evening. The announcement comes after a long period of bad news for the company.

Taro Pharmaceuticals, the Israeli parent company, and Indian firm Sun Pharma, have been locked in a long-running legal wrangle over ownership of the plant, following a failed merger. Last month, the Irish arm of Taro posted losses of E12.3m for the year of 2008.
