Garda Commissioner Fachna Murphy has this week poured cold water over a suggestion that the Garda Training College in Templemore might be under threat of closure as a result of the recruitment moratorium imposed on the public sector, by stating that the world renowned facility will be diversifying into other educational avenues within the force.
Rumours locally had suggested that the Training College, which is regarded as one of the finest such facilities in Europe, would close for two years while the recruitment moratorium was in place, had caused a lot of disquiet in the Carden's town which very much depends on the institution.
Indeed, the issue had been discussed in length at a meeting of Templemore Town Council with members taking the step of arranging a special gathering of Oireachtas members and local representatives in order to hold further talks on the issues.
Mayor Lily O'Brien was present along with the Commissioner at the Garda Training College last week to oversee the graduation of 258 students - fourteen from County Tipperary .
Commissioner Murphy rubbished the suggestions and said that the College would be turning it's attention to continuous professional development of members and further education as a result of the spare capacity in the Templemore College.
