GARDAI in Borrisoleigh are this week seeking help from the general public into the shooting dead of seven wild deer whose carcasses were dumped in plastic bags in a drain near Knockalough, Drombane.
The badly decomposed carcasses of the seven animals had to be removed by North Tipperary County Council after environmental concerns were raised by the Gardai who contacted the local authority in relation to the find. The drain where the bodies were
dumped is very close to the Knockalough resevoir which services most of the Thurles town water supply.
Gardai had been alerted to the find by locals who made the shocking discovery and it is thought that the deer had been shot, probably at night time, and their carcasses dumped in the drain having been transported to the area from elsewhere. The area is known to have quite a lot of wild deer roaming the locality, especially in the wooded areas heaving towards Milestone and Kilcommon.
Sergeant Tom McCormack of Borrisoleigh Garda Station told The Tipperary Star, "This matter is under full investigation and I would be appealing to anyone who has any information to come forward and help us out. If anyone saw people acting suspiciously in the area, please let us know and we will follow this up. This is getting our full attention and we were forced to call in North Tipperary County Council as well to deal with the carcasses which was not a very pleasant job," Sgt McCormack said.
