Boyracers in Thurles have proven to be an unwelcome diversion for residents in the town's Community Hospital, it was revealed this week.
The residents have been woken in the early hours of the morning as a result of boyracers zooming around the Tipperary Institute roundabout, local Councillor John Kennedy has stated.
And Templemore is beset by a similar problem where boyracers are
travelling at "unforgiveable speeds" according to Cllr. Michael C. Ryan.
The comments follows similar concerns raised in both Nenagh and Cashel in recent weeks.
Speaking at a Thurles area meeting on Monday last, Cllr. Kennedy stated that as late as last Sunday they had boyracers going around the roundabout at Tipperary Institute. Patients in the Thurles Community Hospital, he said, had got out of their beds at 2 a.m. to watch them. "It is a very dangerous issue and I have contacted the Gardai", he said.
Cllr. Jim Ryan said another area the subject of boy racers was the Munster Hotel carpark where they were doing turns. He stated that there had been a video of Thurles boyracers on YouTube.
Cllr. Hanafin stated that it was also occurring in the Parnell Street carpark.
Town Clerk, Mr. Michael Ryan referred to another area in the country where boyracing was an issue and said senior Gardai there had stated that they were powerless to stop it. It was, he said, a safety issue everywhere. There were, he said, five areas where he could see on a Monday morning that boyracing had taken place.
Meanwhile at a meeting of Templemore Town Council, also on Monday last, Cllr. Michael C. Ryan stated that boyracers were travelling at "unforgiveable speeds" on the streets of the town.
Cllr Ryan said that it is the duty of all public representatives to highlight the dangers posed by some boyracers who were "putting their own lives and the lives of others at risk through their actions." Cllr Ryan wondered if the drivers who speed on busy streets realized the pain that road deaths have inflicted on so many families and communities all over Ireland. "They need only look at the devastation caused by recent terrible road tragedies to fully appreciate the risks they are taking" he said.
Cllr Ryan said he had a narrow escape in the town recently when he was forced to take evasive action to prevent a collision with a car belonging to a boyracer. He urged boyracers and all other members of the community who drive at high speeds to "stop and think of the possible consequences of their actions."
Cllr Marcus Wilson agreed with Cllr Ryan, adding that some speedsters are using the road in the town park as "a test track." He said "some drivers are trying to discover how fast they can go from one end of the road to the other. Somebody is going to be killed if this continues".
Councillor Valerie Young, "Speed ramps are the only answer. We should put ramps down and that would stop it".
