BIRDHILL Railway Station celebrated 150 years in existence last weekend with a novel one euro fair for passengers who boarded the train at the station.
On Friday last passengers were charged a one euro fare for those boarding the train at Birdhill, regardless of whether they were travelling in either the Nenagh or the Limerick direction.
The novel fare was Iarnrod Eireann's way of offering a ce
lebration fare to passengers as the station at Birdhill completes 150 years of use.
The formal unveiling of the anniversary plaque at the station also took place on Friday evening while later in the evening there was a guided history walk of the village culminating in a display of railway artefacts and photos of Birdhill in bygone years and children's projects in Matt the Threshers. Later in the evening an open air platform at The Coopers hosted a Sean-nos dancing exhibition and Set Dancing Competition with a large crowd present to witness the event.
The celebrations continued throughout the weekend with a display of vintage Cars and machinery and a Fancy Dress/Period Costumes Parade on Saturday afternoon while the search to find a new song for Birdhill packed the crowds in later in the evening at the Birdhill Community Centre.
