Over thirty per cent of fourteen year olds intereviewed in a Thurles sruvey, admitted that they take drink.

The stunning statistic is contained in a survey carried out among a total of 430 young people, male and female, (ages 14-18 years) in a range of secondary schools in Thurles. 424 of the students surveyed were in the 14-17 years category. Six students
were 18 years of age.

The detailed and thought-provoking alcohol awareness report was presented by Tipperary Regional Youth Service in association with An Garda Siochana at an open form in the Anner Hotel on Thursday evening last. The aim of the survey which was conducted last year was to raise awareness, and explore the attitudes of young people towards alcohol.

The findings were presented by Thurles-based Gardai Bart Howard, and Janice Nolan. A year ago Garda Howard was asked by some concerned parents if a problem existed with underage drinking. He gave a commitment to the parents that he and Garda colleagues would conduct a survey in the local secondary schools. The survey team drafted a questionnaire, and visited the secondary schools of the town, with the consent and cooperation of the school principals.

Of those surveyed, 69% said they drink alcohol. 31% said they dont drink alcohol. 16% said they drink alcohol in public houses, 17% said they drink with friends, while 9% consume alcohol at home. 58% drink at other location.
