Felicitations - To Catherine Tuohy, Cabra on the occasion of her recent marriage to Joe McGrath, Kilrush, Co. Clare in Holycross Abbey. They are wished every happiness and many years of wedded bliss.
Unexpected Death of Joe Byrne - As the news of the unexpected death of Joe Byrne, Gortnagow filtered through, shock waves were felt by family, friends and neighbours alike, as they all experienced the loss of a friend who appeared to be so healthy and full of the joys of living. Death is always a time of sadness but particularly so when it comes in an untimely and sudden way. At the age of forty seven, one would imagine that Joe had many years ahead of him, but that was not to be. However his achievements were greater than most of us who are given a longer life span. He was a devoted husband, a loving and kind father and a loving son. As an astute and reliable business man Joe endeavoured to accomplish each task, whether it be a complex installation or repairing a leaking pipe in a proficient manner. In his leisure time he enjoyed hill climbing, music and song, dancing and collecting antiques. On joining the Thurles Camera Club he developed his great photographic aptitude. This coupled with an acute sensitivity to the many facets of nature were instrumental in producing photos of the finest calibre. His collage portraying the flora and fauna of the River Suir and its surroundings is a testimonial to his great talent. Behind his serious expression, there was a jovial and somewhat mischievous personality, his great sense of humour brightened any company in which he found himself and his light heartedness will long be remembered. Over and above all of this Joe was a man of deep faith and sound christian values. Peace to his kindly soul.
To his wife Marie, sons Jamie and Simon, daughter Rebecca, his mother Mary Byrne, brothers Michael, Liam and Donnacha, sisters Eilish, Ann, Bernadette, Siobhán. Carmel and Shúneen, father and mother-in-law Jack and Móna O'Dwyer, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, many relatives and friends, we tender our deepest sympathy. An exceptionally large and representative congregation attended his Mass in the Abbey, celebrated by Rev. Celsus Tierney and concelebrated by eleven priests. Joe's brother-in-law, Liam McGrath with Margaret Heavey sang the various hymns accompanied on organ by Cecelia Maher, his nephew Paul McGrath with guitar sang the Alleluia. After the Requiem Mass, Joe was interred in the Abbey Graveyard.

Abe Kennedy (Portumna) was joined in the concelebrating of the ceremony by Fr. Tony Harris (Family Friend) while Anna and Philip Brown provided the beautiful church music. Afterwards, the newly weds joined with their families and friends for their reception which took place in the County Arms Hotel, Birr before leaving for their honeymoon which they are spending in Africa. So far this summer, our group had some wonderful trips out. In June, Fr. Michael Kennedy said Mass for us at Emmanuel House, which was followed by tea and sandwiches provided by Vina and John Woods. Then we had a very enjoyable sociable afternoon with the Cloughjordan Active Retirement Association. In July so far, we went to Glenstal Abbey, had a tour of their gardens and Icon Chapel. Refreshments were provided by the Abbey. The day was concluded with a meal in Larkins, Garrykennedy. The following evening we joined Portumna Active Retirement Association for a meal and social in Donie O'Meara's, yet again very enjoyable. Our next trip which was a joint trip with Portumna Active Retirement was to Cahir, the Swiss cottage and ended with our evening at Bru Boru – what talent - and of course one of the entertainers on the night was from our parish, James Mounsey.
We always enjoy a little gamble so we headed to Kilbeggan races, needless to say, the pockets were lighter on the way home but still enjoyed by all. Last Wednesday, despite the weather we headed for Clonmacnoise, and took the Viking ship up to Athlone, then it was on to the Hutson Bay Hotel for lunch and finally to Derryglad Folk Museum – what a place- everywhere was spotless and kept very well with some very interesting items – well worth a visit. Our trips for July finish this Wednesday in the Ferry Inn, Portland for lunch. Our thanks to everyone who helped out in any way over the past six weeks on and with our trips.

HERITAGE TRAIL
Thursday, July 15th last was a memorable occasion for Ballina Tidy Towns when Minister Pat Carey, Minister for the Gaeltacht and Community Affairs launched Ballina Tidy Towns Heritage Trail – "A Stroll Back in Time".
With the population explosion, especially over the past two decades, Ballina Tidy Towns Committee felt it was important not to lose our heritage to modern times and to educate new residents and visitors to the area with regard to past times.
With this in mind and with the help of Kevin M. Griffin, Leader Rural & Social Scheme, Ruth Durack (Graphic Design), Vision Sign Printing and Ballina Engineering, Ballina Tidy Towns researched and compiled what we have in our district to day. Ballina Heritage Trail is a short synopsis of points of historical interest in the locality that commences and ends at Riverside Park, between the slipway and the outdoor pool. The trail is a 3km walk, highlighting thirteen points of interest on the way including The Washerwoman's Bridge, Ballina Castle and the Lakeside Hotel.
It also offers information on eleven other places of interest in the locality, which one can access on foot/car such as Tountinna and the Graves of The Leinstermen, located about 5km outside Ballina. There are three information boards on the trail with a map showing locations and a leaflet, which can be sourced at the Killaloe Tourist Office and local shops.

Clonakenny have now qualified for the semi final but more interest will have to be shown if they are to progress further in this competition. MULLINAHONE
Great Weekend For Hurling - It was a great weekend for Mullinahone hurling. The weekend began well for the locals when our Juniors had a do or die win over neighbours Ballingarry by 2-13 to 1-13. On Saturday afternoon the action moved to Kilsheelan when our U/12's were playing in the South Tipp. 12 'B' semi-final against Cahir. On Sunday, club members were well pleased with the 50 or so cut price tickets produced by Runai Eddie McCarthy from Croke Park. Great for Mullinahone people to see Eoin Kelly and Paul Curran playing their parts in Tipps' great win.
Back to the U/12 semi-final in Kilsheelan, there was a stark contrast between the league game and the semi-final showing the vast improvement which Declan McNamara and his selectors Pat Fitzgerald and Sean Reilly have brought about in the team over the last few months. On Saturday the team gave a very skilful display and ran out rather easy winners. Cathal Kavanagh has emerged as a good goalie. His full backline was Shauna Kennedy, the only girl on the team and well worth her place. Conor Croke was at full back and Óisin Drennan was at corner. Our half back line did well with Daragh Kelly at centre back flanked by Conor O'Halloran and Stephen Reilly. Our midfield pair were very impressive. Sean Fitzgerald and Michael Cody worked very well together. Our half forwards have also been improving. Colin Shelly was at centre forward and he was flanked by Eoin Brett and Liam Fennelly. Up front Óisin McNamara was in good scoring form while our two corner forwards Bailey Grace and Colm Mockler also played their part. Subs introduced during the game were Paul Houlihan and David Whelan as well as Colm Byrne, Aaron Byrne and Dale Crowley. The panel was completed by Jordan Denn and the recently returned Jordan Shortt. In the final for which we should have a week or ten days to prepare we will face Killenaule.
