KILCOOLEY PARISH - Just as many others, a group of local cyclists and some family members from near Limerick were waiting for a break in the weather. There reason was simple, every year they plan and complete a 35 mile run just after Christmas for a bit of fitness and fun. However due to the weather conditions they had to cancel the event twice, which proved to be a God send for Revd. Ian Cruickshank (Kilcooley & Fertagh) who joined the group but with the added incentive of raising sponsorship for the parish by selling tickets, each with a time hopefully matching the finishing time of the rector. The extra weeks gave him valuable time to fine tune his fitness. The group started off from Mary Willies heading for Urlingford, Johnstown, Rathdowney, Erill, Templetouhy and Moyne before finishing again at Mary Willies. WINNING TICKET: 5773 + 2 hrs. FIRST WALK OF SPRING
The long 'icy' spell prevented many members of the local walking group from participating in the monthly outings. However, on the first Saturday of December five ladies and two gentlemen traversed through the Glen, out "The Gap" and on to Kilbane and the bravest also completed the return journey back to Garraunboy Church. In January two courageous ladies risked life and limb on the icy roads of Creevroe and Garraunboy. On this coming Saturday, February 6th, we hope to have "Spring in our Step" as we endeavour to shed the accumulated kilos of inactivity!
Assembly point, as usual, is outside Ballina Church Gate at 11am.

MULLINAHONE

Well Done For Haiti - Last week we informed you of two upcoming events to raise funds to help aid workers in devastated Haiti. Great to be able to report that both events were hugely successful. First up on Friday morning last was the Cake Sale in St. Michael's N.S. The idea to fundraise was the brainchild of a group of girls in 6th class in the school. Full marks to Nicole Shelly, Nicole O'Brien, Shannon Fogarty, Gemma Dunne, Chloe Gahan. They enlisted the aid of the other boys and girls in their class. Teachers and parents piled in and the pile of cakes grew. On Friday morning the school was a hive of activity with a huge crowd of visitors. Between the sale, the raffle and donations a sum of 2,437 was raised. This was a terrible effort and all concerned deserve the greatest credit. Well done to everybody. The old motto of Knocknagow is still alive and kicking in the parish. "Mullinahone never wanting in a good cause". On Saturday evening and on Sunday morning we had the basket collection at all Masses being sent to Haiti. Some generous people even jumped the gun and threw in their donations the previous week but these too were rescued for Haiti relief. This weekend the basket collection was a remarkably silent one, it wasn't that the baskets were being ignored but rather that paper falling into them makes no noise. People were most generous and next weekend we'll be able to tell you how much was actually sent to Haiti. Once more "go raibh maith agaibh" to the people of our parish.
Table Quiz - Another chance to help the Haiti Appeal. A Table Quiz has been arranged in aid of the Concern appeal for the people of Haiti. This will take place this Friday night, February 5th in T.J. Macs at 9.30 p.m. and all are welcome.
Community Council Draw - The January Community Council Draw took place recently. Winners were: Jim O'Connell, c/o Hickey's Shop, Helen Howe, Kilvemnon, M. Maher, Rossane, Margaret Hall, Kilvemnon, Phyl Hackett, Ballycullen.
Local Lotto - The next draw will take place on Feb 8th.
G.A.A. - Club Membership 2010 - Every effort is being made this year to register as many members as possible in our parish to mark our 125th anniversary. All members who pay their membership before the 31st March this year will be entered into a draw for one nights B & B in the Red Cow Inn, Dublin and one years free membership of the club. Membership can be paid to Secretary Eddie McCarthy who will issue you with a special edition 125 membership card. Players 50 euro, students and minors 25 euro, senior citizens 15 euro and general public 30 euro.
Juvenile Presentation Night - Last Saturday night our U/16 County football winning team were presented with their South and County medals at a well run function. The presence of South Board Chairman Dick Egan added greatly to the occasion while Niall Curran was our guest of honour presenting the winners medals following his own superb performance marking none other than Kieran Donaghy and Captaining Tipperary in their recent McGrath Cup game. Many tributes were paid to the players and to the great work and dedication by their manager since they were 10 years of age. Chairman Johnny Kennedy paid tribute to all who work so hard in the juvenile club and to the ladies in the kitchen who once again served up the food and refreshments. A special touch on the night was John Leahy presenting Jack Shelly U/14, Cathal Horan and Eoin Fennelly U/16 with special awards to mark their achievement in winning All-Ireland medals with Tipperary.
Juvenile A.G.M. - This Friday night at 8.30 p.m. you can show your support for the Juvenile Club by attending their A.G.M. It is vital that anybody who can contribute in any way on or off the field to attend. Support from parents would be a great boost to everybody for the coming year.
