The Coppola Brothers’ Charming Moonrise Kingdom Features At The Source Arts Centre

Moonrise Kingdom was co-written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola’s son.

This is a charming film about young love in a more innocent America.

It is heartfelt and thought through to the tiniest, quirkiest detail.

Teenage newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward play Sam and Suzy, two smart, unpopular kids who fall in love. Sam is a member of the local scout troop; an orphan, clever if not wise beyond his years. Suzy likes sci-fi novels and the music of Françoise Hardy, which she plays on a portable record player. She often spies on her parents and their friends using binoculars, and the movie in many ways shares her deadpan detachment.

When they run away together a frenzied search ensues. Suzy’s parents marriage is in crisis and they are sunk in anxiety and self-pity. The police chief is lonely and depressed for reasons of his own, and the scout troop leader is preposterous yet dignified in his absurd shorts and long socks. Grown-ups and kids are united in their fear and loathing of the social services officer, keen to put Sam away in an orphanage.

This was the surprise hit of the summer in the US and features a stellar line-up with Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Ed Norton, Jason Schwartzman, Harvey Keitel and Frances McDormand. It is however the two young leads that take centre stage and carry the film on their shoulders and make Sam and Suzy’s romance a captivating and cute affair.

Moonrise Kingdom will play at the Source Arts Centre on Wednesday, October 3rd at 8pm - tickets E9 (E7concession & E5 for film club members). Please enquire at the box office for more information about film club membership and prices. Why not make a night of it? The Source Bar will be open from 7pm.
