Noel Coonan TD Welcomes Funding For Tipp Festivals

Noel Coonan TD has welcomed the announcement of funding for Tipperary regional festivals in 2013. The local Fine Gael TD said Nenagh Silent Film, Terryglass Arts Festival and the Glen of Aherlow Walking Festival will receive E3,000 each. Thurles International Hurling 13’s will benefit from E2,000 and Clonmel Junction is to receive E4,000.

“The regional festival funding is provided by Fáilte Ireland and it was announced last Thursday by my Fine Gael colleague and Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring,” explained Deputy Coonan.

“I want to acknowledge the excellent work carried out by these groups and hope that this funding adds to the success of their projects,” Deputy Coonan said.

“Our local festivals in Tipperary are the perfect opportunity to showcase our county. Events such as the Terryglass Arts Festival are central to the government’s plans to develop the tourism industry. It’s estimated that festivals are worth some E450 million for the economy.

“It is vital that we continue to support our vibrant local festivals and also encourage our friends and families to do so. We can do this as part of the Gathering 2013 which aims to boost tourism by inviting people to get together in our local communities for festivals and events,” said Deputy Coonan.

Minister Ring announced that funding of just over E685,000 has been approved by Fáilte Ireland for 170 regional festivals and events taking place next year nationwide.

The huge range of other festivals being supported by Fáilte Ireland under the Regional Programme of the Festivals and Events Initiative includes the Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival in Tullamore, Kilkenomics in Kilkenny and the Sarsfield’s Day Pageant in Limerick.
