‘Lonely’ Thurles Not On The Planet

TIPPERARY plays second fiddle to neighbouring Limerick in the latest edition of the backpacker Bible, The Lonely Planet, which hit shelves this month. Millions of visitors to our shores trust the Planet’s recommendations on where to go, stay, and what to eat and see in each county. Tour companies, and tourism chiefs, keep a close eye on what the travel guide says about their native town.

The 2012 Ireland edition is now on sale in The Bookworm, Thurles. While Cahir, and particularly Cashel - the iconic Rock is one Ireland’s Top 10 highlights - come in for praise, other towns don’t fare so well. No mention at all is made of the home of hurling, Thurles, with its soaring Cathedral, and famous Semple Stadium. Not a single B&B, guesthouse, restaurant, or attraction in Thurles is mentioned in the Lonely Planet this year. Thurles just doesn’t exist. Neither the famous Carden’s Wild Demesne of Templemore, one of the finest planned towns in Ireland with a town Lake which Councillors claim is the pride of Munster.
