Lauded German Movie Barbara To Be Screened In Nenagh

Set in the 1980s in East Germany director Christian Petzold’s Barbara is a tense and slow burning cold war drama set for the big screen at Nenagh Arts Centre.

Barbara (Nina Hoss) is a talented doctor exiled from Berlin to a provincial northern town for trying to obtain a travel visa. Paranoid from repeated intrusions by the Secret Police into her life she doubts each person she meets.

Can she trust the clinic’s head doctor Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld) who seems to want to build a bond with her? Or should she believe her mysterious boyfriend who after a few illicit trysts offers her a bona-fide way out of the Eastern Bloc? When two young people are admitted to the hospital where Barbara works - a suicidal young man and a teenage girl harbouring a dangerous secret - Barbara must face a moral and personal dillema.

Barbara screens at 8pm on Thursday, February 21st. Admission is priced at E7 and the film’s cert is 12A. Tickets will be available at the door.

Delia Murphy Remembered

A reflection and musical show on the life of renowned Irish ballad singer Delia Murphy will be performed at Nenagh Arts Centre on Saturday, February 23rd (8pm). The folksinger known affectionately as ‘Murphs’ almost single-handedly prompted the Irish folk revival and captured in song an expression of emerging Irish nationhood.

Throughout her life Delia balanced writing, recording and performing her songs with a hectic life as the wife of an Irish diplomat. From the 1930s to the 1960s she and her husband TJ Kiernan, lived in London, Rome, Canberra, Bonn, Ottawa and Washington as Kiernan was posted to various Irish embassies around the world. Delia made records in London, Dublin and New York, performed regularly on radio and appeared in the film The Island Man.

Gerry Anderson and Maureen O’Donovan sing and talk us through Delia’s career, drawing on knowledge of the singer and her songs including favourites such as ‘The Spinning Wheel’ and ‘If I Were a Blackbird’. Poet and playwright Carmen Cullen reflects on (her aunt) Delia’s life in a dramatised reading from her own novel Two Sisters Singing. Admission is priced at E8.
