International Artists For Holycross Christmas Crafts Fair
There is a decidedly cosmopolitan aspect to the Christmas Craft Fair this year at “The Studio”, just down the road from the 800 years old Cistercian Abbey in the Suirside village of Holycross, which is now in its sixth year and growing in popularity.
The Fair showcases an array of handcrafted Christmas gifts, including ceramics, feltwork, jewellery, photography, paintings, cards, Christmas wreaths, festive plants for the garden and much more by artists from Ireland, Switzerland and Austria.
The well-known artists invite folks to immerse themselves in the relaxed, creative atmosphere of “The Studio”, (opposite Parker’s Restaurant) and to browse in a myriad of gift ideas, while enjoying a glass of mulled wine. The perfect way, indeed, to start the festive season of Mi Na Nollag.
The Studio’s resident artists, Mary Scott, Jackie Matthews and Siobhán Curran, this year welcome on board to the event newcomers, Katrin O ‘Shea (Basle, Switzerland) Christine Maxwell (Cork) Sofie Loscher (Austria and Dublin) “The success story of the Studio in Holycross started with a bag of modelling clay from the boot of a car”, stated Mary Scott.
Returning to her native Tipperary, artist Mary Scott, set up her own business, travelling from house to house, engaging children in the fun of creativity. Mary was invited into St. Michael’s National School in Holycross to run after-school Art Classes. She went on to build her own studio at her beautiful home in Holycross. This studio has been in operation for more than a decade, and has served the local community with many hours of creative pleasure. It has offered adults and children pottery classes workshops, summer camps and its unusual baby hand and foot prints. Mary’s undoubted passion for art and children inspired her to create this unique educational and creative art centre in the picturesque village of Holycross, a mecca for thousands of visitors annually and where the dramatic arts are catered for by a dedicated local committee with the annual County Tipperary Open Drama Festival. The most recent addition to the centre is Little Picassos’ Creative Pre-school.
In 2005, artists, Jackie Matthews and Siobhan Curran, joined Mary at The Studio, and each has contributed her own individual expertise and style. Every year, in the first weekend in December, the studio opens its doors to the local community to showcase its array of handcrafted Christmas gifts, and to enjoy a glass of mulled wine.
For this craft fair, The Studio welcomes Katrin O’Shea of Basle, Switzerland, who is an Art Teacher in Dublin. Christine Maxwell from Cork, who is a Horticulturist at the Botanic Gardens and Sofie Loscher, who is currently doing a Masters in Fine Art in Dublin. Mary is very thankful for the continued support of the local community “It is because of that support that the studio has gone from strength to strength over the years”, She says.
The Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, 1st December, 6–10pm and Sunday, 2nd December, 12 noon–6pm. It’s an ideal way to support local enterprise and creativity, particularly during Yuletide.
