Ancient and modern walking routes in South Tipperary

ANCIENT pilgrimage roads in South Tipperary and their modern-day benefits will be the topic of a public talk on Wednesday next, November 7th in Cashel. Newcastle native and archaeologist Dr Louise Nugent will present a lecture on St. Declan’s Way and the Rian Bó Phádraig (track of St. Patrick’s cow) entitled “The Rian Bó Phádraig: Untangling the evidence of medieval roads in Tipperary and Waterford”. These medieval roads formed part of an ancient pilgrimage route linking Cashel with Ardmore in County Waterford, passing through Cahir and Ardfinnan, over the Knockmealdowns to Lismore and down to the coast. It is said that St. Declan and St. Patrick, two men who led the conversion of Ireland to Christianity, travelled to meet one another along the route. Louise will speak about the significance of this route and the findings of her own archaeological research.

Efforts are now underway to develop and promote St Declan’s Way and the Rian Bó Phadraig for walking and pilgrimage along the lines of the Camino of northern Spain. Kevin O’ Donnell, a walking enthusiast, B&B owner and chairperson of the Knockmealdowns Active Group, will outline the potential benefits of the project for local tourism and the work needed to bring the route up to a proper standard. The project is also being supported by South Tipperary Development Company.
