Positive Ageing

Positive Aging Week 2012 activities were co-ordinated by a committee comprising of voluntary representatives of Active Retirement Ireland, St Vincent De Paul, Thurles Town Council, Golden Years Day Care Centre, Thurles, Home Instead Care Thurles and An Garda Síochána.

Monday 1st October 2012 kicked off with a day trip to Croke Park Stadium, Dublin. The group of 41 departed Thurles shortly after 9am arriving at Croke Park for the midday tour.

The Tour was extensive lasting an hour and fifteen minutes and travelled the full stadium taking in the Players Lounge, the dressing rooms, the warm up area, to be topped off by walking out the players Tunnel onto Croke Park Pitch sampling the match

day atmosphere.

A special function was put on for the group in one of the Corporate Boxes where a top class meal was served up! An afternoon visit to enjoy the Croke Park Museum borught the day to a close before heading back for Thurles.

On Tuesday afternoon Pampering Sessions were enjoyed by many at the Anner Hotel with gentle group exercise sessions, Colour Therapies and foot and back Massages.

On Wednesday a Celebration Day Mass was held, officiated by Fr Tom Lanigan Ryan and Dean Philip Knowles. The mass was held in the Ballroom of the Anner Hotel, Thurles, there were approximately 80 people in attendance. Tea/Coffee and cake was then served before the music took up and the dancing saw out the afternoon.

Thursday’s historical walk of Thurles with George Willoughby was a great success commencing at St Marys Church and finishing in the Source Centre Library with Refreshments. Art Classes in the Golden Years Day Care Centre were fully booked on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday Pat Speight Storyteller was on hand to spin a yarn, morning sessions for the schools followed by an afternoon session for grandparents and children.

Positive Aging Thurles would like to especially thank our sponsors St. Vincent De Paul Society, Thurles Town Council, Thurles Lions Club and Thurles Credit Union. Also a special thanks to Conor Stakelum, George Willoughby, Thurles Library, Thurles Order of Malta, Treasa Halpin, Margaret Connolly, Mary Campion, Kathleen Murphy, Bridget Fitzgibbon, Marian Felle and Bill Noble all of whom played an integral part in the weeks activities.
